It appears the boy, who was under two years old, was staying at a property in Co Roscommon with his parents. Irish police said the boy was hit by the car near Ballinagare just after 9am on Friday. He was treated at the scene but later pronounced dead. His body was taken to University Hospital Galway mortuary for a post mortem. No other injuries were reported from the crash. The boy was killed near the house where he and his family lived. It is understood his parents frequently visited the area. Fianna Fail councilor Paschal Fitzmaurice said: “Members of the local community are shocked and saddened by the death of the young child. “Our condolences are with the family at this sad time. I want to send our condolences to the family and let them know they are in our thoughts and prayers.” Tom Crosby, independent councilor and Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, said the local community had been left devastated by the “terrible accident”. “It was horrible,” he added. “As Cathaoirleach of the council I want to send my sincere condolences to the boy’s family and friends and all the neighbours. It is such a tragedy. “The incident was so unfortunate the way it happened. It’s a tight-knit community and the area is in total shock. “It’s not a typical holiday home place, but it’s a quiet location for visitors.” Police in Ireland are appealing to road users who may have video to make it available and witnesses to come forward.
