The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, August 20, 2022 for the first time in over five years, headlined by a blockbuster Welterweight Championship bout that will see Kamaru Usman run back with No. 2 contender, Leon Edwards. In the UFC 278 pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, No. 4-seeded middleweight contender Paulo Costa aims to spoil the return of former 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold. Gordon tries to blitz, eats a knee to the body on his way in. Nice little blitz with two minutes to go. Santos tries to catch him coming in with knees and elbows. Some heavy kicks from him, he eats a palm right in. Gordon much busier with his hands, nice low-high two-piece. Vicious Effervescence to the body and head against the fence with a minute to go. Tighten. More to Gordon’s body, knee by Santos. Gordon keeps the pressure, hits the clinch. 10-9 Gordon. Round 2: Low blows from Gordon. Solid knee by Santos. Gordon ties him up and carries him to the fence. Separation, return, separation. Knee lock by Santos one minute in. They work well for him so far, but Gordon has all the good punches. More shortcut buttons. Effervescent Gordon, Santos header attempt. Nasty elbow from Santos as he eats punches for two minutes. I’m looking to pull Gordon to take the back. Gordon turns to him and pushes him against the fence. Knees to thigh. Two minutes left. Body from Gordon. He does a good job of leaving some space and lands a few shots in the gut before tying up again. Split with a minute to go. Again Gordon comes in with punches, absorbing a knee on the way. Separation. Steady crosses from Santos, who seems to be starting to feel the rhythm. Gordon marches behind him to the bell. 10-9 Gordon. Round 3: Santos lands a kick, eats a right palm. Low blows by Gordon. Drive right down. One minute in. Gordon continues to push forward. Effervescence on the fence. Santos doesn’t offer much in return. Trading punctures. Two minutes in. Another flurry from Gordon. Santos’ only consistent offense has been his knees inside and those are becoming rarer and rarer. Gordon digs another body shot as he gets in the clinch and continues to go to work with short punches. Nice one right down, then another and some head shots behind him. Two minutes left. Gordon just walks behind him, lands another right to the midsection and clinches. Punches at the break. Another right body was shot in the sphincter. It’s on cruise control. Well timed double leg by Santos, can’t drive past. Gordon lands punches from the sprawl position with a minute left. Hammers pile up. Santos takes him to the fence, tries to turn around, eats punches at the bell. 10-9 Gordon. Final result: Gordon def. Santos by unanimous decision
145 pounds: Luis Saldana vs. Sean Woodson
Round 1: Negotiation begins at a distance to begin. No one lands clean yet. Woodson tries a 1-2 behind a spin. One minute in. Saldana to the body, trips him with a low kick. Woodson chase. Saldana catches a kick, can’t use it, lands a low kick. Control the left hook and body kick. Woodson lands a jab, absorbs a spinning backfist, lands a body kick two minutes in. Straight left. Saldana’s hamil lact. Check the hook. He’s moving well so far, eats a body kick and then looks to knock Woodson senseless with a check hook. Saldana tries to leave, but Woodson gets up, clearly still affected. Another jab sends Woodson to the mat, and a taunting Saldana runs in and hits him with an illegal knee before punching him unconscious. The umpire stops and, incredibly, lets Woodson continue, opting to just take a point. Two minutes left. More strikes from Saldana, Woodson keeps going. Woodson punches the turnbuckle. Saldana tries an elbow on the break. Low kick, left hook. One minute to go. Low kick drives Woodson up. Saldana tries a Superman punch from the cage. 9-9. Round 2: Corner from Saldana. Low kicks. His movement still looks good. Body kick, counter right. One minute in. Jab from Woodson lands well. Clear 1-2, his first major connection of the match. Saldana spins, lags, lands a combo. Low kick. The striking was close in this round and had Saldana in a submission for two full minutes. Round 3: Woodson continues to move forward. Solid left hand after eating low kicks. Nice piercings. Clear straight left. Diagonal counter combo one minute in. Reaction shot by Saldana, eats elbows, closes the body. Woodson holds a kimura hold.
